WHY GO
The small, verdant Caribbean island of Nevis is famed for its natural beauty. Dominated by a volcano that descends from a misty peak through rainforest to a circle of fine white-sand beaches, it was spotted by Columbus - and named - on his voyage to the Americas in 1493. Once colonised, its fertile soil made fortunes for the owners of the sugar plantations who built opulent mansions, and the island became a popular haunt of high society. Today, some of its grander plantation houses have been restored and are run as stylish and comfortable retreats. Most are discreetly hidden away in exotic gardens on the slopes of Nevis Peak on the lush south side of the island.
