Visas: Citizens of the UK, Europe and North America do not require visas if they have a passport and return ticket. Travellers from all other countries should verify with their embassies as to whether they require visas. Travel visas last up to three months.

Public Holidays: New Year's Day, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Labour day (1 May), Independence Battle Day (24 May), Bolívar's Birthday (24 July), Independence Day (10 Aug), Columbus Day (12 Oct), All Saints' Day (1 Nov), All Souls' Day (2 Nov), Christmas Day, New Year's Eve.

Good buys: Ceramic and textiles products are good value.

Local dishes: The seafood is excellent throughout the country. Local dishes include arroz con menestra y carna asada (rice with beans and meat) and puerco (suckling pig). Specialities include caldo de patas (soup made from cattle hooves) and cuy (roasted guinea pigs).

Interesting fact: There are 31 volcanoes in Ecuador.
