GREEN STREET HOUSE

BATH, ENGLAND
PHOTO GALLERY
LOCATION
On four floors of an ancient house in one of the city's best boutique-shopping streets (the Bath Sausage Shop and FishWorks fishmongers are also conveniently placed opposite the spa). Treatment rooms are above an apothecary-style shop that sells hand-picked products by Penhaligon's, Modern Organic Products and Elemis, among others.

DECOR
Original features (elaborate windows, wide, dark wooden floorboards, grate fireplaces) mixed with eclectic contemporary furnishings: dark-wood shelving, pale-green walls, linen blinds and lots of taupe.

CREDO
Less a spa than a glorified beauty salon, offering 'essential maintenance and grooming' for women and men. The duo behind the venture, therapist-turned-sales director Colette Mallon and ex-Propaganda vocalist Betsi Hughes, say they wanted to create something with an organic look and feel rather than a traditional, 'clinical' salon.

FACILITIES
Include a changing/locker area, and a relaxation room with two large taupe sofas, a Tibetan table made from an intricately carved door and interior-design books to browse through.

DAY PACKAGES
There are three spa rituals: one for Total Beauty - which includes an OxyJet facial, a new, no-needle oxygen-injection treatment favoured by celebrities - and two for well-being: the Moorish Ceremony of Dreams and the Royal Thai, both of them Elemis-based. I recommend the Royal Thai, a five-hour ceremony which consists of a lime-and-ginger salt scrub followed by a coconut-flake rub, a 'Milk Bath' envelopment in foil and a Japanese Silk Booster Facial ('silk protein, or sulphur compresses, combined with pure plant phytoamine biocomplexes and intelligent algae'), which seems to work wonders. One of four mixes of essential oils is used for the massage, which was relaxing and did not focus on particular trouble spots. I chose the Spirit Reviver with lemon, lime, peppermint and grapefruit.

SERVICE
My therapist, Natalie, was young but professional and considerate, asking if I suffered from claustrophobia before applying the wrap. Her scalp massage was so relaxing that it sent me to sleep.

FOOD
A day ritual includes lunch delivered from one of Bath's organic eateries. I had a delicious crayfish and rocket salad from The Fine Cheese Company.

BEST THING
Everything looks exquisite, including the owners, a glamorous pairing of American blonde and Irish brunette. Elemis's Rehydrating Rosepetal Cleanser comes a close second.

WORST THING
The treatment room wasn't warm enough during my massage.

RATING
8/10

PRICE
Massages from £35; rituals from £150.
