Tor Cottage is set in 18 acres near Chillaton, six miles from the market town of Tavistock, and is well located for walks on Dartmoor. The most private of the five rooms is Laughing Waters, a clapboard cabin beside a stream with a gypsy caravan in the garden. The interior is snug, with pale Shaker-style furniture, patchwork bedspreads and a pot-bellied stove. The other four rooms have log fires; all come with trugs containing a bottle of Cava, chocolate truffles and fruit, all complimentary.

Evening 'picnic platters' (£28 for two) and breakfast hampers - containing brioches, croissants, orange juice, fruit, home-made muesli and a platter of wild salmon, eggs and crème fraîche or cheeses and cold meats - can be delivered to your room.
