| Explore Constable country from The White Hart, Michel Roux's restaurant with six rooms in a 15th-century coaching inn in the village of Nayland. Although Roux doesn't cook here (you'll find him at the Waterside Inn in Bray), the restaurant, under Carl Shillingford (formerly of The Ivy and Le Caprice), is excellent. The bedrooms are decorated in a sassy French style: the best is Alexandra, furnished in pinks and reds with a canopied bed. Caroline, in blues and yellows, is the smallest, but has high ceilings.
X-FACTOR The set table d'hôte menu (Tues-Fri) costs just £17.50 for two courses, or £21.50 for three. CONTACT The White Hart, High Street, Nayland, nr Colchester, Suffolk (01206 263382; www.whitehart-nayland.co.uk). Doubles £105 | |
