| A fine old pub which has been tastefully restored by Piers Baker, who once ran a group of small gastropubs in London, in the heart of Constable country. The look is cosy, with open fires and oak beams. The cooking is modern and simple with Italian elements, and friendly but not fussy service. The flavours are robust, and seasonal, so in spring expect fresh pasta stuffed with Swiss chard, ricotta, sage butter, and farmyard chicken, roast potatoes, anchovy and spring garlic, with cherry vine tomatoes. When it is warm enough to dine alfresco, they will make a picnic up for you. Five pretty rooms have huge beds with crisp linen, hand-made natural bathroom products and power showers.
