THE FACTS ABOUT THE LODGE
Scotland

Shortly before you get to The Lodge at Loch Goil, there's a pass quaintly but appropriately named Rest and Be Thankful. The sentiment holds true once you arrive at the house. Although only an hour by car from Glasgow Airport, The Lodge feels impossibly remote and utterly peaceful. It's a place for relaxation: boating on the loch, curling up by the fire with a tot of whisky, lying in the bath watching the Scotch mist drift between lake and mountain, dancing until dawn on the huge dining table that has been known to seat 20. Owner Iain Hopkins, who runs a film production company in Glasgow, bought this Arts & Crafts property about six years ago, primarily as a film- and fashion-shoot location. It proved so popular that he has now extended the Lodge's remit, with the help of his partner, Alice Gill, to include weekends, parties and weddings.
You will fall under The Lodge's spell the moment you step inside the front door, its charm is instant and unpretentious. After a day out walking, fishing, riding or cycling, guests are as likely to be found chatting in the kitchen or poaching recipes from the chef as they are to be formally seated in the imposing dining room. When Helena Christensen stayed, she mucked in and made tea for everyone. The staff (encompassing manager, waitresses and driver) are helpful and accommodating, but never obsequious. Dark wooden floors, slate in the bathrooms, tongue-and-groove panelling, iron bedsteads and wooden chests help create a fresh, simple feel, while strong colours (mainly warm reds and greens), open fireplaces, candles and the occasional velvet drape add atmosphere and a hint of decadence. The eight bedrooms are all named after Scottish islands. At the loch's edge is the Summerhouse - a simple, self-contained studio with wood-burning stove - which doubles as the honeymoon suite. From the Summerhouse's mezzanine bed platform, with only the deck and water in sight, you could almost think yourself adrift on the loch.
