This is a good hotel, in a central location, occupying a Regency building with most of the rooms facing a pretty church. There are 42 bedrooms decorated using a soft palette of beige, pale olive, terracotta-red and cream, with five-star beds and bathrooms with freestanding, clear-glass wash basins. Rooms have CD players, satellite TVs and 24-hour room service (impressive, considering the price). The restaurant, Merchants, is well regarded, serving delectable scallops and a good choice of wines. Although you may be asked to clear your table for a second sitting. A Victorian-style bar is planned for the autumn. It is advisable to book well in advance.
