Hotel Barcelona is the place to stay if you are in Exeter on business. There are 46 rooms in the old Victorian Eye Infirmary, all with high ceilings (out of proportion in the pokier double rooms, though effectively grand in the public areas). The look is kitsch Gaudí, with bright checked bedspreads, peacock-blue, mosaic-tile bathrooms and curly ironwork. Food (pizza, salads) and prices are reasonable and in the basement is Kino, a private members' club open to guests.
