CASTELLO DI FONTERUTOLI

CHIANTI, ITALY
PHOTO GALLERY
This intimate little golden-rubblestone village stands on the estate of one of the best-known producers of Chianti Classico. Castello di Fonterutoli has been in the Mazzei family since 1435 and, despite being just off the main road into Chianti from Siena, is utterly peaceful and relaxed. The family villa in the heart of the village has a formal Italian garden and a swimming pool for residents, with fantastic views over to Siena and Monte Amiata. There is also a small osteria serving Fonterutoli wines and local dishes such as tagliolini with truffles. Anyone interested in wine-making can tour the cellars or take part in a wine-tasting.
The most striking apartment on this property is Pastore, with its antique terracotta floors, bare-beamed ceilings and walls washed with shades of gold, ochre, peach and apricot. The huge loggia is furnished with Indian day beds piled high with cream-linen cushions. It stays cool on the hottest afternoons and makes an unforgettable location for a dinner lit by beeswax candles and a Moroccan lamp. Pastore also has a huge traditional kitchen with a vast fireplace for winter dining. Other accommodation includes Limonaia, the Count's own winter house (complete with family portraits and formal antique furniture), and Carpentiere, a well-designed one-bedroom apartment. There is also a small house, Badiola, a few kilometres outside the village.
