THE RITZ-CARLTON MOSCOW

MOSCOW, RUSSIA
PHOTO GALLERY
Located on Moscow's most famous street, The Ritz-Carlton was built on the rubble of one of the Soviet Union's ugliest and seediest hotels, the Hotel Intourist. Fortunately, The Ritz-Carlton inherited nothing but its prime location. Its rooftop bar boasts one of the best views in Moscow, taking in the Kremlin's terracotta-coloured walls, Red Square and the Christ the Saviour Cathedral. Guests recline on the wooden deck in summer and in a glass relaxation area in winter. This area includes an upmarket sushi café and cocktail bar, with armchairs shaped like Fabergé eggs. A vodka sommelier is on hand to explain the finer points of Russia's national tipple. There is also a marble-floored fine-dining restaurant called Jeroboam, with a menu conceived by chef Heinz Winkler (whose Residenz Heinz Winkler in Bavaria has three Michelin stars). Popular dishes include pigeon en croûte and crayfish with saffron. The hotel's wine cellar stocks over 800 bottles, the highlight being a 1961 Château Petrus (US$69,000). There is a luxurious spa complex with 14 treatment rooms, a swimming pool lit trough Swarovski crystals, and a steam room and sauna. The bedrooms offer top-drawer luxury and vary only in size and view. The hotel is popular with businesspeople and celebrities, but it is also a good choice for a romantic weekend break.
