| At last, a funky base from which to explore the wild beauty of Ireland's west coast. A 150-year-old ice house, long the centre of Ballina's salmon-fishing industry, has found an unexpected new role as the fulcrum of one of Ireland's most stylish and innovative new hotels. Self-styled 'rock-n-roll architect' Joe Kennedy's offbeat vision takes full advantage of the hotel's dramatic location overlooking the Moy River as it winds towards the Atlantic. He has added two new, river-facing wings, largely constructed below ground level, and wrapped a spectacular glass extension around the lovingly restored building. The large, atmospheric suites in the old part are period-with-a-twist: French antique furniture, Chinese basins and deep-pile carpets are mixed with plasma screens, iPod music libraries and oversized wooden baths. The modern rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows framing the river and woods beyond, so you can lie in your super-king-size antique bed with goose-down mattress topping and watch seals fishing for salmon. The intimate, brick-vaulted Pier Restaurant specialises in superbly cooked local fish and seafood, and eating and drinking alfresco on the terrace should be a treat in summer (Irish weather permitting). The restful Chill Spa provides treatments for men and women, using holistic Babor products. WHEN TO GO From April, boat and fishing trips leave from the hotel pier, and Ireland's best surfing is nearby. ROOM TO BOOK All rooms have river views; ask for one with a balcony.
