The first European hotel from the Asian hotel company GHM is in a nondescript part of Milan. The former industrial area of Bovisa is a far cry from the exotic locations generally associated with hotel guru and company chairman Adrian Zecha; but it is well placed or the new Fiera di Milano trade-fair complex, and its former factories are currently being made over into lofts and art spaces. With cool, Asian-tinged decor by Indonesian design studio Jaya & Associates, The Chedi will no doubt lend a hand in this renewal. The 250-room 'urban resort' has a high-quality fusion restaurant, a long, slim indoor pool with an attached sauna, hammam and gym, two executive floors with extra services (including a personal butler) and more luxurious suites, and a spa by Henri Chenot which looks set to become one of the best in Milan. With their clean, geometric lines, muted earth hues and sparing use of tasteful, ethnic details, the bedrooms are designed to soothe the business travellers who make up much of The Chedi's clientele. Free Internet access, conference and meeting facilities, a 40-room long-stay annexe and important little services such as next-day laundry return are other baits to tempt the hotel's core user market.
WHEN TO GO
Avoid the premium-price fashion weeks and furniture fair unless you really need to be in town.
ROOM TO BOOK
Don't sniff at the standard ('deluxe') doubles: they are roomy, with decent-sized bathrooms.
