THE BOWERY HOTEL

NEW YORK, USA
Created by hoteliers Eric Goode and Sean MacPherson of New York's Maritime hotel, The Bowery Hotel has cultivated a sense of depth and character by evoking old-style Manhattan glamour. It's in an area with a skid-row past, but the times they are a-changing: you have only to look up and down the street to see the packed bars and restaurants, new apartment buildings and a smattering of cranes and construction sites that indicate more to come. Behind the unassuming, redbrick exterior, regal comfort reigns: heavy, red-tasselled keys hang behind the front desk, and the large lobby lounge and zinc-topped bar area resemble a sexy, baroque drawing room. But it's the open-air back patio with its mosaic tiles and welcome greenery that gets the most guest traffic. The 135 rooms combine character with modern luxury (those room keys open hi-tech electronic locks). Huge orchids, antique rugs, and customised, 400-thread-count cotton sheets keep things cosy, and style details such as white subway tiles in the bathrooms, concertina bedside lamps, and bath products from a 169-year-old West Village apothecary give the suites personality without going overboard. In spring or summer, take advantage of the sidewalk tables at Gemma, the hotel's lovely Italian restaurant.
