The Mykonos Grace, the first in a smart new mini-chain planned for the Greek islands, has already made waves by winning the European Hotel Design Awards 2007. The compact roadside resort might look like an average Cycladic white cube from the outside, but step out of the lift onto the rooftop with its restaurant and pool and there are sensational sea views across to Mykonos harbour, a mile away. The decor is eyecatching, too: a glowing bar with backlit photographs, solar-powered lamps and super-sized sunloungers. The 32 bedrooms, including three VIP suites, are distributed over five levels to maximise privacy. Superior Suites have private verandahs with plunge pools, and are a big hit with honeymooners. Although some rooms are small, breezy white interiors ensure they all feel airy and bright. Blown-up photographs of blossoms or seascapes add a splash of colour; chocolate-coloured bathrooms have sexy rain showers. The small ayurvedic spa has a nail bar (very Mykonos) and a water menu (very Claridge's). Gracious staff seem genuinely eager to spoil guests. Complimentary treats include iced towels for sunbathers, a Champagne breakfast served until noon and late check-out facilities and a car to and from the airport, and the first round from your minibar is on the house. After dark, the pool bar provides the sultry setting for a Grace cocktail, created by mixologist Salvatore Calabrese, who calls it 'sophisticated and subtle, like its namesake'.
