After an extensive revamp, the new-look Hout Bay Manor makes a bold and colourful statement with plenty of South African soul. The interiors of the 19th-century house are now vibrant; saffron-coloured hallways are decorated with handpainted friezes of indigenous flora and fauna. In the lobby there's an enormous standard lamp made from stacked enamel basins, while the open-plan lounge/bar features squashy pink sofas, coral-print curtains, brass chandeliers draped in sparkly glass beads, unique African craft from local vendors and wall-to-wall oil paintings of South African landscapes. Zulu imagery is used in a hip, contemporary way on tablecloths and cushions, and proteas are the flower of choice. The 21 rooms are warm and whimsical with updated designs of traditional Cape furniture and fabric prints inspired by tribal skirts. Some of the suites are a bit snug, others are enormous, but all have four-poster beds, quality white bed linen and the requisite 21st-century technology. There are witty touches such as cookie jars filled with marshmallows, and baskets and sun-umbrellas to take to the beach (a 10-minute walk away). Executive chef Alexander Mueller works wonders in the new restaurant, Pure.
