Leave it to legendary Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa to build his own retreat on the island's most dramatic spot. Now a six-suite spread managed by Geoffrey Dobbs, the Brit behind some of Sri Lanka's finest boutique properties, Lunuganga is two hours' drive south of Colombo near Bentota Beach. Bawa bought the abandoned rubber estate in 1948, building a bungalow and adding a room with each successful hotel commission. The all-white Guest Room offers pared-down elegance while the delightfully cluttered Studio Suite pays homage to his artistic talents. Four hectares of Italianate gardens are maintained according to Bawa's exacting final orders. Idyllic, lazy days end with sundowners on the veranda: the Lunuganga Sour (white arrack with lime and sugar) is the signature tipple. Private fire dances can be arranged but most will find the stars an ideal accompaniment to some of Sri Lanka's tastiest curries.
