GRANDE PROVENCE

FRANSCHHOEK, SOUTH AFRICA
PHOTO GALLERY
Cape Dutch houses are very fashionable now and Grande Provence estate has one of the most celebrated examples in South Africa. Built in the 17th century and now at the heart of a 30-hectare vineyard in Franschhoek, an hours drive from Cape Town, it has a typical baroque gable and an adjacent homestead, called the Owners Cottage, that has had a makeover by Virginia Fisher, who designed Huka Lodge in New Zealand. The rough Dutch interiors have been swapped for a pared-down look that reflects the old style but brings it nicely up to date. All the rooms have been opened up and furnished with wonderful pieces from the Cape. The result is a successful hybrid of new and old, with ancient ceiling beams, desks covered in ostrich skin, and flat-screen TVs. Theres a main suite and four doubles (all with fireplaces), a sitting room, conservatory and swimming pool. The estate produces award-winning Count Agusta wines and the easy-drinking Angels Tears label; The Restaurant is open for lunch or dinner and there is a private dining room for special occasions. The Owners Cottage sleeps a maximum of 10, but if its just the two of you, nobody else will be allowed in.
