The 97-room Cosmopolitan, in a 1960s office block, is as straightforward as it is stylish. Owner Gil Blutrich, a Zen enthusiast, has taken his favourite theme and run with it:
the interiors were designed with an energy-balancing expert; all the bedrooms have yoga mats; and an incense menu is part
of the turndown service. Other karma-enhancing touches include a hybrid car
as the guest limousine and a ventilation system that promises to double the volume of fresh oxygen circulating through the building. The colour scheme is predominantly brown with blue accents, because brown is for grounding and blue for dreaming. Esoterica aside, the Cosmopolitan is extremely comfortable and chic, with hardwood floors and almost wall-to-to wall windows for spectacular views of Lake Ontario, the landmark CN Tower and buildings by IM Pei and Mies van der Rohe. Theres also a real sense of privacy. With only five rooms per floor, all with kitchens and some with separate sitting areas (rooms two, three and four on each level), its like having your own apartment with room service. All the bedrooms are big, but the Designer Penthouse is vast, with covetable modernist furniture, an infinity-edged tub, and a wraparound terrace. There is also a Zen spa and solarium, and a lounge-restaurant, Doku 15, serving Asian tapas and tea-based Martinis.
