Amanwella opened just after its Sri Lankan sister Amangalla. But while Amangalla focuses on the island's colonial past, Amanwella celebrates
its high-end, sea-front future. Set in a grove of towering coconut palms near Tangalle on the southern coast, this
30-bedroom eyrie has been built on a trio of ascending terraces. The wood bungalows that house the bedrooms
are rather uninspiring, but the interiors
are fantastic and they all have massive glass walls, private plunge-pools and terraces with uninterrupted sea views. These completely open-plan spaces
are furnished with items crafted from sturdy kitul wood, while oversized bathtubs are perfectly placed and
sized for sunset gazing à deux. The
surf on the southern coast can be
rough (the beaches are actually off-
limits much of the year) but Amanwellas
45-metre, infinity-edged swimming
pool is a magnificent consolation.
The beach pavilion, for barbecues and salads, makes a good alternative to
the restaurant, where the menu focuses on fresh seafood. Theres a low-lit bar surrounded by angular reflecting pools and grassy courtyards, along with a
cool library stocked with tomes on Sri Lankan crafts and culture.
WHEN TO GO
Christmas, when the waters of Godellawela Bay are at their
most tranquil and the resort lures the most glamorous guests for whom Aman-hopping has become a way of life.
