Le Telfair is one of three new hotels on the previously undeveloped south coast, all built on the old sugar estate of Bel Ombre. Le Telfair bagged prime position. It lies on both sides of the coastal road, with a tunnel connecting the beachfront resort and the 18-hole golf course. The grand, 19th-century colonial style of the buildings is very convincing, with sash windows, handsome wooden floors and wood-panelling, high ceilings and cornices. There are 158 extremely elegant rooms and suites, distributed in 20 two-storey villas either along the beach or on the shady banks of the Citronniers River estuary. Here the colonial theme continues, with dark-wood floors, faithfully reproduced East India Company furniture, neutral decor and French windows opening onto verandahs. There are five restaurants under the direction of executive chef Dominique Blais, formerly of The Ritz in London: Annabella's, with its chef's table and impressive wine cellar; Gin'ja for Japanese seafood; Le Palmier for light poolside lunches; the Cavendish bar for snacks; and Le Château de Bel Ombre, in a restored plantation house, which serves a gastronomic menu twice a week. The golf course, which is shared with the Heritage Golf & Spa Resort, is scheduled for completion this month and there is an enormous Six Senses Spa in a walled 'village' with nine treatment rooms, each with a private garden and outdoor shower.
