| THE FACTS ABOUT HUVAFEN FUSHI | |
| Maldives | |
| Huvafen Fushi opened in July 2004 on a tiny island in North Malé Atoll, the second hotel from Per Aquum Resorts & Spas (Dhoni Migili was the first). Thirty minutes from Malé International Airport by speedboat or half that by seaplane, the resort is a chic blend of discreet luxury and modern design, with 43 overwater and beach bungalows. The two Ocean Pavilions offer the ultimate in luxury, with private plunge pools, split-level terraces leading directly into the water, private dining areas and Jacuzzis. They combine sleek minimalism with Frette linen, designer furniture by names such as Frank Gehry, plasma-screen TVs and Bose music systems. The cuisine in the three restaurants - Celsius for global fare, Salt for seafood and Raw for lighter 'spa' options - is simply delicious, with many ingredients grown organically on the island. Just beyond the entrance pictured here is a lively bar scene catering to the clientele of well-heeled couples, and Vinum, the wine cellar, can be booked for private meals - or take a chilled bottle of Louis Roederer Cristal on a trip aboard the traditional dhoni. Under the watchful eye of general manager Nick Downing (formerly of Soneva Gili), service is exceptional, with a 'thakaru' (butler) on call throughout. Aquum Spa is a tranquil place in which to exercise, take a yoga class, or enjoy
a massage in one of two underwater treatment rooms. WHEN TO GO Any time ROOM TO BOOK For the super-discreet, an Ocean Pavilion CONTACT Huvafen Fushi, Malé, Maldives (00 960 444 222; fax: 444 333; www.huvafenfushi.com). Doubles from US$660; Ocean Pavilions from US$2,900 | |
