Located in the heart of El Raval, Barcelona's coolest barrio, Casa Camper is minutes from the Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA), the Centre of Contemporary Culture (CCCB), the Ramblas and El Raval's trendiest bars and restaurants. The hotel is owned by the shoe company Camper and was designed by Fernando Amat, creator of Barcelona's iconic interior-design store Vinçon. The Camper company's quirky outlook is reflected in facilities such as a free 24-hour serve-yourself cafeteria in the nightclub-style lobby and the private 'mini-lounge' across a corridor from each room, where guests can watch TV from a hammock or catch up on work. The bedrooms, with their blood-red walls and wide, comfortable beds, are cosy; the vast, walk-in showers are luxurious - although the toiletries, as you might expect from a hotel that discourages elitism, are not. The right-on vibe continues with slogans telling you to 'walk not run', 'express yourself' (a message sometimes visible from the loo) and reminders that 'you are what you eat'. Nonetheless, this paean to minimalism and ecology is great fun, from the jelly slippers supplied with each room to the clunky wooden bicycles for hire.
