Just as the Ed Tuttle-designed Park Hyatt (Hot List 2004) took business accommodation in central Milan to
new heights, the new Bulgari hotel - which opened in May last year - has transformed the hotel scene for sophisticated leisure travellers. Just five minutes' walk from the recently reopened La Scala, with both the Duomo and Milan's famous fashion quarter a short stroll away, the location is unbeatable. It is also the only hotel within the city walls to have a garden.
In summer, this tranquil miniature park becomes a magnet for Milan's beautiful people, who spill out of the hotel's fabulously fashionable bar before moving on to the theatrical restaurant with its 'modern Italian' menu. The Bulgari is also Milan's first designer hotel with a full-service spa, the centrepiece of which is an exquisite lap pool accessed by four submerged gold-mosaic steps. The bedrooms may not be the largest in town, but they do have everything you'd expect in terms
of gadgets and style: the decor is a contemporary blend of beige, brown and black offset by light-oak floors, mosaic-tiled, walk-in showers and deep, travertine-marble baths. The hotel's real sense of luxury, however, comes from little details: Tivoli radios, 'elephant-ear' sponges, a choice of incense and a special bath menu (such as candles, rose petals and Champagne) prepared by the staff.
