When Anastasios Andreadis first sailed into Sani in the late 1950s, it was a deserted swamp. Andreadis clearly had foresight: he bought 1,000 acres from the monks of Mount Athos, drained the marsh, and gradually turned it into one of the hottest properties in northern Greece. Sani Resort is now an eco-reserve on the pine-fringed Kassandra peninsula in Halkidiki, comprising several hotels and bungalows nestled
between rolling hills and white-sand beaches.
The latest addition, Sani Asterias Suites, is in a class of its own. All 50 suites, decorated in creamy pastels, have sea views overlooking either the private beach or the jet-set marina with its boutiques, bars and restaurants. The marble bathrooms are stocked with Dr Hauschka toiletries and the terraces are furnished with bamboo loungers. If a trip to the poolside restaurant seems too much like hard work, chef Georgia Nikolopoulou will whip up a nouvelle-Greek meal to be served in your suite. There is an outdoor cinema, and wine tastings are held regularly. Should you crave a taste of the real world, buzzing Thessaloniki is a 45-minute drive west.
