101 HOTEL

REYKJAVIK, ICELAND
PHOTO GALLERY
For a long time, Reykjavik's status as a style hub was let down by its lack of hip places to stay. 101 Hotel intends to change all that, and it seems to be succeeding: a year after opening, it is still the best place to find the capital's buzz. A 1930s building in the city centre, it was formerly the headquarters of the People's Party and it retains a sense of dress-down egalitarianism; ties are definitely not required.
The 38 rooms are decorated in a clean, minimalist style, and their oak-floored bathrooms with huge showers and freestanding tubs are particularly admired. The design talent and impeccable connections of owner Ingibjorg Palmadottir ensure that the bar-restaurant attracts the city's beautiful people like nowhere else. Her brother-in-law, Baltasar Kormákur, directed the award-winning film 101 Reykjavik which, like the hotel, takes it name from the city-centre postcode in which both are located.
