Fans of the Sun House, the former home of a Scottish nutmeg merchant that featured in our 1999 Hot List, have been rewarded with a sister property, Doornberg, a beautifully restored 18th-century Dutch house. Situated across the road from the Sun House, Doornberg has just four suites with polished-wood windows and door frames, deep
verandahs, book-lined shelves and mosquito-net-draped four-posters. From its position above the UNESCO-protected old fort, there are views out to sea, while the garden is enormous with a croquet lawn in front and an infinity pool overlooked by palm trees.
The emphasis is on peace and quiet, which is encouraged by the owners' no-children-or-televisions policy. There are also two 1930s cars to take guests pottering about the town of Galle, reinforcing the slightly wistful, otherworldly atmosphere. Breakfast is served on the patio or veranda; lunches and snacks are served throughout the day in the garden or by the pool. Supper is served at the Sun House and is based on the freshest ingredients available that day, such as grilled swordfish with mango salsa or sesame-crusted mahi mahi fish with ginger sauce. The chefs are very accomplished and all the staff are delightful.
