People expect colour, energy and a big dollop of theatricality from Broadway, and the new W New York Times Square delivers with aplomb. After all, how many Manhattan hotels have an underwater entrance? The charm of the W lies in its cartoon quality. The foyer features a glass box containing a waterfall, the water running freely out of the sides and down the walls. Up on the seventh floor, the main lobby and lounge have tribal stools and board games in Perspex containers. At this 16th W, fun comes first. Blue Fin serves excellent seafood to a lunchtime business crowd, but to watch the bustle of Broadway, eat at the restaurant's glass-walled bar. Underneath the hotel there's The Whiskey, a deliberately rough-at-the-edges nightspot where the dance floor is tiled with cells of coloured liquid. The 509 sober, grey rooms, with their panels of gleaming chrome, provide a respite from all the jollity.
