HOTEL VICTORIA

NORFOLK, ENGLAND
PHOTO GALLERY
The Victoria, a former pub on the North Norfolk coast, is the best thing to happen to English hotels since Babington House opened in 1999. Although it does not compare with Babington for cutting-edge interior design, the Victoria does offer better value for money. Plus, it's the kind of place where you will feel comfortable wearing dirty boots or Jimmy Choos. The clientele is a down-to-earth, thirty- to forty-something crowd. There are 11 double rooms, all decorated in solid colours, with simple, Indian teak tables and colonial-style hip baths. In the public areas there are comfortable, 'beaten-up' armchairs and an open fire. The pace is slow, which includes the service, especially when the whole of North Norfolk is clamouring for a table. The hotel describes its cuisine as 'comfort food', but the fish and chips (wrapped in The Daily Telegraph ) are better than you'll find in a Conran. Relax and enjoy glorious walks across nearby dunes.

WHEN TO GO
Winter for romance and summer weekends for families, but the coast is prettiest in autumn

WHICH ROOM TO BOOK
The Raj Room, with its four-poster Indian teak bed, and dark blue and black-slate bathroom. Avoid rooms above the restaurant (The Colonial and The Holkham), as they can get noisy

CONTACT
The Victoria, Park Road, Holkham, Norfolk NR23 (01328 711008; fax: 711009). Doubles £100-£170
