There's a majestic hush in the lobby of the newly restored Cour des Loges. But behind the towering stone arches lies an exceptionally friendly hotel. The 63-bedroomed property was carved out of four 14th- to 17th-century buildings which now attract business professionals and creative types. The Renaissance-cum-contemporary mix of dark, rich fabrics and colours, Italian frescoes, antiques and sleek modern furnishings is both visually arresting and cosy. There's a small indoor pool and a tiered garden where drinks are served and the restaurant, in the magically lit central courtyard, has a menu of creative combos whipped up by rising young star Nicolas Le Bec. Highlights include his homemade duck foie gras with black figs, roast crayfish with purple artichokes and the divine chocolates, which are also sold in the hotel boutique. Le Bec has just won the coveted GaultMillau guide award for Chef of the Year 2002.
