This tiny boutique hotel, a 20-minute walk from the Royal Mile in Newington, Edinburgh's vibrant student district, offers an affordable alternative to the city's more traditional establishments, without compromising on quality. A welcoming reception area, which looks as though it was designed by Stanley Kubrick, boasts leather sofas and circular banquettes, above which hang illuminated grape-like orbs. In the excellent restaurant, chef Brian Jones presents everything from pappardelle with shitake-and-truffle sauce to fresh Scottish seafood. Although Borough's nine bedrooms are small, they are both comfortable and warm and there is a DVD player for those who can't bear to crawl out from under their duck-down duvets. An enormous showerhead and Molton Brown toiletries in the bathrooms complete the luxurious surroundings.
