This new luxury 42-room hotel in the heart of Sydney's retail and business quarter is situated in a substantial former bank, designed by colonial architect Edmond Samuel Blacket in the 1850s. The Blacket has retained the building's neo-classical exterior and a fine internal staircase, but elsewhere it is unapologetically contemporary. Although there is a fashionable restaurant, Minc and a trendy basement hangout in the atmospheric old bank vault, Minc Lounge, the Blacket is extremely well hidden, most of the pedestrians walking outside would be unaware of its presence. Understatement is the design signature throughout. The rooms, beautifully appointed with comfy sofas and CD players, are deliberately sober. Designer John Harrs has restricted the interior palette to creams, whites, dark browns, black and charcoal-grey. Only Minc's pink wall niches betray a more playful impulse. The Blacket is comfortable, convenient and fun.
