Not strictly a hotel, Rick's restaurant*bar*rooms, which opened last August in the heart of Edinburgh's Georgian New Town, is the perfect antidote to the formality of the Balmoral or Caledonian, and much more central than Malmaison. Its bar-restaurant - modern, dark walnut furniture, slate floors, and an eclectic pan-European-meets-Pacific Rim menu - occupies the basement of a neo-classical townhouse, while its 10 bedrooms occupy three floors of an abutting Georgian warehouse. They are decorated with elegant wood panelling inset with good lighting and furnished in a comfortable, contemporary style. The bathrooms, too, are a treat, with luxurious robes and towels, and an abundance of Molton Brown toiletries. Best of all is the service. The staff are so genuinely friendly, helpful and obliging, with their offers of CDs, DVDs (there is a decent library of discs), newspapers, restaurant reservations and room service, that you will, in all likelihood, want for nothing during your stay.
WHEN TO GO
August, when it is a perfect base for the Edinburgh Festival. The Festival Theatre and the Usher Hall are equidistant, and it is within easy walking distance of almost every venue and gallery. Rick's is also well-placed for Edinburgh's smartest shops and Princes Street
WHICH ROOM TO BOOK
All of the rooms are identically furnished and overlook the same mews, but room nine, at the top, has a floor-to-ceiling window. Doubles £90
