It is amazing that Agra, home of the Taj Mahal, should have had to wait so long for a truly first-class hotel. The Amarvilas, which opened in January this year, offers panoramic views from surroundings of elegance and comfort not commonly found in India. A joint venture between the Oberoi group and India's Goyal group, the Amarvilas ('Eternal Haven' in Sanskrit) was designed by the same team which produced Rajvilas in Jaipur. Set in Mogul-style gardens, the hotel combines Persian and Moorish influences with post-modern touches: the entrance hall has a domed, gold and cobalt-blue ceiling and a cut-glass chandelier. All 112 rooms have views of the Taj Mahal - some from terraces, a few from the large double beds. The Amarvilas aims to cater for both business travellers and well-heeled honeymooners. Ambassador cars are on standby for airport and railway pick-ups. Facilities include a swimming pool, library, gymnasium, shops and therapy suites (aromatherapy and massage).
