THE BJÄRE PENINSULA

SWEDEN
PHOTO GALLERY
WHY THE BJARE PENINSULA?
This is undoubtedly one of the prettiest parts of Scandinavia. Known as the Swedish Riviera (although there are a few areas trying to claim that title), the main Bjäre towns of Båstad and Torekov are invaded by a very fashionable and posh set during the summer months. Båstad more so than Torekov, where the main morning ritual involves a swim from the Morgonbryggan, the "morning pier". It is wise to rent either a car or a bicycle to get a chance to discover Bjäre properly. As it is the breadbasket of Sweden, don't be surprised if you find sweet unmanned retro stalls on the side of the road where local farmers sell their goods. Just put your money in the kitty box and drive off with your purchase.

WHERE TO STAY
Torekov Hotell reopened in July 2007 after a lengthy reconstruction, and its clean, serene rooms are impressive. With 54 rooms and three separated cottages (perfect if you want some added privacy), the hotel has plenty of space and service is charming. The hotel's spa is good, and you can play both tennis and golf in the local area. Plus, it is only a short walk to Morgonbryggan in the morning.

FURTHER AFIELD
Catch the train to the coastal town of Helsingborg and jump on the ferries to Elsinore in Denmark. The Swedes - and Danes for that matter - are known to spend hours crossing the border this way without setting a foot on the ground (it only takes 20 minutes each way), while enjoying the food and drink onboard. Scandlines' ferries operate from Helsingborg's harbour twice an hour around the clock.

MORE INFORMATION
Båstad's tourist office has a good website with more information about restaurants and hotels in the area (www.bastad.com).
