Equal in fame to the Parador Hostal de los Reyes Catolicos, if not quite in luxury, is the Parador de Granada, which fulfils one of the romantic traveller's greatest dreams: to sleep inside the walls of the Alhambra. In a Franciscan monastery founded by Ferdinand and Isabella, the parador is so popular that rooms should be booked at least six months in advance in high season. The chapel's mix of Moorish and Christian detailing sets the tone for the parador proper, which has a flower-scented Renaissance courtyard at its centre. The sensuality of the Alhambra's gardens envelops the hotel, making for a peaceful retreat in which to escape the crowds of tourists.
