Few hotels occupy a setting of such architectural importance as the Parador Hostal San Marcos. Pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela have been staying here since its reconstruction in the early 16th century, when it must have stood out as one of the most sumptuous buildings in Spain. It is a 'Plateresque' masterpiece - architecture imitative of the filigree work of silversmiths, or plateros. The enormous ornament-encrusted façade fronts the hotel's finest bedrooms, in which antique furnishings and elaborately crafted doors are combined with such modern conveniences as large round bath tubs.
