THE FACTS ABOUT SALAMANCA
Spain Salamanca

Known as the Cuidad Dorado, or The Golden City, Salamanca is full of weathered golden-coloured Renaissance sandstone buildings. The 2002 European Capital of Culture is aesthetically stunning, with village charm in big city surroundings. Salamanca is considered the home of the "purest" Castilian Spanish, which attracts many who want a language-based holiday where they can attend classes while soaking up some Spanish sun. The setting for such study couldn't be better as the very beautiful University of Salamanca dates back to 1218. Salamantinos hang out in what is dubbed their living room, the very beautiful and buzzing Plaza Mayor. Originally a hub for bullfighting, it now hosts a variety of local concerts and musical festivities. If you want a dose of Spanish history, you should visit Salamanaca's Archive of the Spanish Civil War, the only one of its kind in the country.
