Often overlooked in favour of neighbouring Barcelona, Girona is called the "city of the four rivers" and its almost Venetian-looking terraced houses perch on the banks of River Onyar. The houses are famous for its Roman details and Girona itself is a hub of culture, design and history - unsurprisingly, perhaps, when you take into consideration that the city has been dominated by Romans, Arabs and Jews throughout history. Girona is located between the Pyrenean Mountains and the Costa Brava, so it is a great place if you want an outdoor vacation. The Sant Pere de Galligants Archaeological Museum, set within a 10th-century Benedictine monastery, shouldn't be missed, while the Arab baths housed inside a Capuchin convent is great if you want total physical relaxation without paying city-spa prices.
