A city that is almost entirely surrounded by parks, Bilbao sits on the banks of the Nervion River. The medieval Casco Viejo, the old town, is the most colourful area and the home to the Frank Gehry-designed Guggenheim Museum since 1997. Part of the city's major urban renewal program, the Guggenheim hosts numerous temporary exhibitions alongside a permanent collection of 20th-century paintings and sculptures. Bilbao's recent facelift is also obvious in the incredible slug-shaped metro system designed by Sir Norman Foster, and the town is a haven for those interested in art, design and architecture. You should also pay the white steel and concrete Zubizuri Bridge by Santiago Calatrava and the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum a visit.
