ST MORITZ

SWITZERLAND
THE RESORT
St Moritz is an all-round winter-sports resort on two levels, above and along the shores of a lake in the Engadine valley. Winter Alpine holidays were invented here by the British in 1864; few of the town's imitators have eclipsed its sensual attraction

THE SKIING
The region divides into four sectors with 57 lifts. The main nursery slopes are at Corviglia, the closest area to the town centre, while across the valley there is more advance terrain. Diavolezza and Lagalb are reached by train or bus

THE NON-SKIING
The Cresta Run is the home of the 'skeleton', an extreme form of head-first tobogganing that was reintroduced as an Olympic sport during the winter of 2001 in Salt Lake City. It is exciting to watch, and you don't have to join the Cresta Club to do so. Other spectator sports include bobsleigh, ski-jumping and - on the frozen lake - horse-racing, show-jumping, polo, golf and even cricket

THE KNOWLEDGE
Stay at the Suvretta House (00 41 81 836 3636), in whose ballroom Nijinsky gave his last performance. This resort-within-a-resort has its own ski lift, ski school, skating rink and mountain restaurants. Recommended tour operator: Swiss Travel Service (01992 456123).
