SIERRA NEVADA

SPAIN
THE RESORT
Sierra Nevada lies 32km up a winding mountain road from the ancient Moorish city of Granada, a practical journey for daily skiing (except on weekends or public holidays). Granada makes a more comfortable and cultured base than the ski village, Pradolla

THE SKIING
The high, 19-lift ski area in the Sierra Nevada mountains offers mainland Europe's most southerly skiing. Its unique weather pattern vacillates alarmingly between too much and too little sun and snow. From the top, you can see the Atlas mountains of Morocco

THE NON-SKIING
Granada is a place to be relished, especially the Alhambra, whose palaces, courtyards, museums and gardens can be explored at a time when it is virtually devoid of other tourists. There are fine Moorish buildings elsewhere in the city, a long-established gypsy quarter and some of the best tapas bars in Spain

THE KNOWLEDGE
Stay at the Hotel Alhambra Palace (00 34 95 822 1468), a belle époque hotel by the palace, or Parador de San Francisco (00 34 95 822 1440), a converted monastery. Recommended tour operator: Kirker Holidays (020 7231 3333). For more information go to www.cetursa.es
