THE RESORT
The focal points of this stylish resort, which has lavish hotels and superlative restaurants, are the fine medieval church and old buildings in the main square. You can hire sleigh taxis driven by local farmers whose winter income no doubt outstrips their EU subsidies

THE SKIING
The extensive skiing is on well-groomed pistes in three ski areas. If you have a car, Megève is the most pleasant base from which to enjoy the 13 resorts (including Chamonix and Argentière) and 121 lifts covered by the Evasion Mont Blanc lift pass

THE NON-SKIING
Jazz venue Club Les Cinq Rues (00 33 4 50 21 24 36) attracts major artists during the ski season. The Palais des Sports (00 33 4 50 21 59 09) contains, among other things, an Olympic-size skating-rink and electric-powered ice bumper-cars. Shopping is the major pastime, with antique and jewellery shops, designer boutiques, and interior decoration outlets

THE KNOWLEDGE
