WHERE Beautiful village near Chamonix with cobbled pedestrianised streets and a fine medieval church. The suburbs stretch in all directions, so pick accommodation in or close to the resort centre. WHAT Three ski areas with wide and easy pistes; nursery slopes based at the largest area, Mont d'Arbois; cable-car from the village centre. A low-altitude resort with a short season, so go in January or February. WHY The International Ski School has a fine reputation. Good village for showing off designer ski wear and for activities including jazz (Club de Jazz Les Cinq Rues attracts the stars). Stylish hotels, gourmet restaurants. HOW Little more than an hour's drive from Geneva airport. Plenty of hotels. Les Fermes de Maris is based around eight 16th-century cow sheds.
