WHERE
Traditional ski resort offering the full Scandinavian experience: white weatherboard houses set in pine woods, reindeer sleigh-rides and welcoming locals who all speak perfect English.
WHAT
Cross-country skiing is Geilo's main sport, but there are 18 lifts for downhill skiing, in two areas; and since Norwegian skiers are late starters, foreigners have the slopes to themselves before lunch.
WHY
Childcare and ski tuition can't be faulted; close to an airport; and if you discover that downhill skiing isn't for you, cross-country is readily available. The prohibitive cost of alcohol is a minus point.
HOW
Geilo is 30 minutes' drive from Dragali airport, and four hours from Oslo by car (there is also an excellent train service). The Vestlia Hotel has an indoor swimming pool and a nightly seafood buffet.
