ACKERGILL

NEAR WICK, CAITHNESS, SCOTLAND
Ackergill is a 15th-century tower house on the edge of Scotland's north-east coast. It hosts luxury house parties, meaning that unless you hire out the whole place, you are only able to come and stay hotel-style on one of seven designated 'house party' weekends a year. They are well worth booking ahead for. As in many of these castles, there's no specific bar or restaurant or reception here. That's because this isn't really a hotel but a home brilliantly designed for the use of paying guests. Ackergill has 25 bedrooms.

FACILITIES
Horseriding, golf, river fishing, clay-pigeon shooting, game shooting.

CONTACT
Ackergill Tower (01955 603556; fax: 602140)

COST
Three nights cost £625 per person full board (Hogmanay costs an additional £125), including all drinks, activities, local transport, organised games, barbecue and walks with a ranger. Golf, riding, clay-pigeon shooting, game shooting and fishing are extra.
