Le Jas de l'Ange (roughly, 'the angel's resting place') was built five years ago, although the use of reclaimed materials and slightly haphazard look of the place (the wisteria-covered outbuilding, an abandoned wooden cart, ancient iron day beds dotted about the garden) might fool you into thinking it has been around for centuries. It lies in 13 hectares of land in the eastern Alpilles, a low mountainous region of dramatic crags, pine trees and olive groves. Just a few minutes' drive east of the pretty village of Eygalières, Le Jas stands at the end of a long, winding driveway, backed by a high, rocky outcrop with
far-reaching views of the area.
Three years ago the owners, Eric and Laurence Hannoun, opened four separate, self-contained guest suites, each decorated in classic French style (linen curtains, traditional embroidered bedcovers) with exotic accents: Moroccan tea glasses and lanterns, silver wash basins and huge Ali Baba urns. The tour de force is a heated swimming pool, cleverly constructed to resemble a natural bassin carved into the rock with a sand-effect surround and wooden jetty. Massages are offered in a converted outhouse. Lunch is served daily in the boho, Moroccan-style summer dining area with its fireplace, silk-covered divans and Marrakech lanterns. Two dinners a week can be arranged in advance, but the well-regarded Bistrot d'Eygalières (slightly pricey but worth every penny) and its sister restaurant Le Petit Bru (serving good-value set menu dinners) are just up the road.
