CHATEAU DE CASSIS

CASSIS, PROVENCE, FRANCE
PHOTO GALLERY
Set high on a cliff above the fishing port, Château de Cassis is a familiar sight to locals, with its imposing, 13th-century stone turrets redolent of the region's history. After seven years' meticulous restoration, the château has been converted from a private home to a luxury, five-suite B&B with a peaceful walled garden and swimming pool.

Each of the huge suites is different, but they all have whitewashed walls, plump pastel sofas and bay windows with mesmerising coastal views, except for the Moroccan-themed, poolside Riad suite. The Jean-Baptiste and Chambre de la Tour suites have small whirlpool tubs wedged into their circular bathrooms in the tower, and tall, arched windows in the sitting rooms, both of which have fireplaces. Equally charming is the Romantique suite, with its canopy bed, huge, clay-tiled bathroom decorated with Grecian statues, and its own patio.

Breakfast is served on the terrace or majestic vaulted salon; a Michelin-star restaurant, the Villa Madie, is a five-minute stroll down the hill.

ROOM TO BOOK: Jean-Baptiste for the best view of the sea from bed; Romantique for playing late-night serenades on its while piano.

Traverse du Château, Cassis (00 33 4 42 01 63 20; www.chateaudecassis.com). Suites from €350
