CONTEMPORARY
Housed in a former 18th-century print works, again in the lively 6th arrondissement, the 115-room Hôtel Bel Ami is a younger, hipper version of the Hôtel Montalembert. Opened in January 2000 by Grace Leo-Andrieu, the hotel attracts a frenetic, dark-glasses-at-midnight crowd which isn't inclined to linger. The lobby sets the designer tone with a large mirrored bookshelf showcasing 20th-century fashion designers, and a cabinet displaying French design classics (Bauchet coffee cups, Vicari vases) alongside cream cube lamps, soft-brown sofas, blond-wood tables. Two Internet stations, a small, mosaic-tiled bar and a separate 'fireplace lounge' are also on the ground floor. There is no restaurant but the basement-level Cantine serves a predictable but good buffet du petit dejeuner.
ROOMS
Spread over four floors, the rooms are either classical or contemporary. The traditional rooms, with their pastel fabrics, contrast sharply with the rest of the hotel; the modern rooms are just what you'd expect, clean-lined and unfussy in gentle shades of brown, blue, pistachio and cream. White marble bathrooms boast decent-sized tubs and powerful showers. Go for the rooms that end in the number four (314, 414, etc) which are particularly light and spacious thanks to their corner position.
