There's no sign on the door, no music in the lobby, no hopping bar scene. The Mercer is defined by what it lacks. Focusing on comfort and service rather than trying to grab attention by any means necessary, it has become the premier downtown property in New York. A favourite with celebrities and producers of film and music (its sibling is the Chateau Marmont in LA), the Mercer still generates a considerable buzz (quietly, of course) since its opening. Converted from a redbrick 1890 building, the loft-like rooms, some with exposed brickwork, cast-iron columns and arched windows, provide zen-like calm in the middle of SoHo's clatter. The Mercer Kitchen, in the basement, serves Jean-Georges Vongerichten's deservedly popular New American cuisine (sautéed duck breast dusted with spices, dates and baby turnips).
